What Is Genicular Artery Embolisation? A Game-Changer for Knee Pain in Older Adults

Knee pain is one of the most common complaints we see among people above 55. Simple activities like walking, sitting, climbing stairs, or even getting up from a chair can become difficult. Many patients are told that knee replacement surgery is their only option—but that’s not always true anymore. At Bankers Vascular Hospital, we offer a cutting-edge, non-surgical treatment called Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE). It’s safe, minimally invasive, and especially helpful for elderly patients who cannot undergo major surgery. In this blog, I’ll explain GAE in simple, patient-friendly language so you know exactly how it works and who it’s meant for

What Is Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE)?

Genicular Artery Embolisation is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure used to reduce chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, especially in older adults.

Instead of cutting or replacing the knee joint, we work from inside the blood vessels.

During GAE, a specialist blocks tiny abnormal blood vessels around the knee joint that cause inflammation, pain, and swelling. Once these vessels are blocked, pain reduces naturally and mobility improves.

How Does GAE Reduce Knee Pain?

In osteoarthritis, the knee joint develops:

Extra inflammation

Abnormal blood vessels

Increased nerve sensitivity

These abnormal arteries supply painful, inflamed tissues.

In GAE, we selectively block these tiny vessels, which results in: ✔ Reduced inflammation

✔ Less nerve irritation

✔ Better knee mobility

✔ Long-lasting pain relief

Most patients feel improvement within 2–6 weeks.
