Mobile Phone Overuse & Shoulder Pain: Understanding Tech Neck

In today’s world, mobile phones are everywhere — at work, home, or during travel. But did you know that prolonged phone use can lead to shoulder and neck pain, commonly called “Tech Neck”?

What Is Tech Neck?

Tech Neck occurs when the head tilts forward while looking at screens. The human head weighs about 4–5 kg, and tilting it forward increases stress on:

  • Neck muscles

  • Shoulder muscles

  • Spine

Over time, this strain can cause pain, stiffness, and tension headaches.

How Mobile Overuse Causes Shoulder Pain

  • Forward head posture – puts pressure on cervical spine and shoulder muscles

  • Rounded shoulders – leads to tight chest muscles and weak back muscles

  • Repetitive strain – texting or scrolling increases tension in shoulder and upper back

Symptoms include:

  • Aching or stiffness in shoulders and neck

  • Headaches at the back of the head

  • Reduced neck mobility

  • Tingling or numbness in severe cases

Simple Tips to Prevent Tech Neck

  1. Raise your phone to eye level instead of bending your neck down.

  2. Take frequent breaks – every 30–40 minutes, stretch your neck and shoulders.

  3. Strengthen shoulder and back muscles with simple exercises.

  4. Maintain proper posture when sitting or standing.

  5. Limit screen time when possible.
