Daily Care Routine for Lymphedema

Patients

Managing lymphedema requires consistency. The right daily practices can prevent flare-ups, control swelling, and improve quality of life.

Daily Care Checklist

1. Skin Care

● Keep skin clean & moisturized

● Avoid cuts, burns, injections, or blood pressure checks on the affected limb ● Use mild soaps and fragrance-free moisturizers

2. Compression Garments

● Wear your prescribed garment daily

● Replace every 4–6 months

● Ensure proper fit to avoid skin damage

3. Gentle Exercise

Activities like:

● Walking

● Swimming

● Cycling

● Deep breathing exercises

● Physiotherapist-guided lymphatic exercises

Movement activates muscle pumps → better lymph flow.

4. Elevation

Elevating the limb above heart level for 15–20 minutes helps reduce swelling.

5. Diet & Hydration

● Stay hydrated

● Reduce salt intake

● Maintain healthy weight

● Eat fiber-rich foods

6. Avoid Triggers

● Tight clothing

● Heavy lifting

● Prolonged sitting/standing

● Extreme heat (steam, sauna, hot wax)

7. Regular Follow-Up

Periodic assessments help adjust compression levels, detect infections early, and optimize results.
